Most people desire success in one form or another. Some just daydream about it, while some are working every day to achieve it. In today’s society we are surrounded by a culture of money hungry and materialistic ideas that can consume are thoughts and mentality. This mindset comes from the “happiness” materials bring into our lives when we obtain them. Success is one of those concepts that we all understand, and yet, in reality it means something different to each individual. What might represent financial abundance to you might represent poverty to someone like Bill Gates. Success can be defined in many different ways some may see it as being able to spend their time freely enjoying the good things in life. Others may see success in the acquisition of knowledge, growth and understanding. For me “success” means being able to wake up every day with a smile on my face doing the things that I love i.e. writing, being a life coach and just being a positive outlet for as many people as I can.
True Meaning of Success
One of the most vital steps to attain success in life is to understand the meaning of success for your personal life. The true meaning of success in my opinion goes far beyond the common definitions such as having a lot of material things, being wealthy and having tangible things such as advanced education. However true success cannot be measured with the factors I named above, but instead should be measured with the amount of happiness and joy one has in life and the impact you have on people. This is more important than any monetary success you can achieve. Media and society often portrays images that conclude that living a successful life means to be extraordinarily wealthy and have a lot of tangibles.
How Do You Define Success?
The only person that can answer the question above is you. I am neither able nor willing to prescribe the ultimate definition of success, as this is not possible. Everyone has a different way of thinking about being prosperous in life and defining success. Therefore there cannot be a definition that is applicable to all. It is very important that you know exactly how to define success in life. Make yourself aware what accomplishment, success and prosperity in general means to you in your life. Some might define success as having luxurious cars and a huge mansion, whereas others consider a life full of joy and happiness with their family as the true meaning of success. Once you have figured out what is important for you personally you are able to focus on your visions and goals. How do you define success and what are the steps that you are making to attain this success? Comment below & if you like this post please share!

Great post! Right now my definition of success is a little shaky, since I’m still young! But for now, my definition of success is having a great work/life balance where my happiness does not stem from the amount of money I make 🙂

Great post! It really makes a person think. As you stated…success comes in all shapes and forms and that changes between each person. For me there isn’t just one definition. It could be that my son is learning his ABC’s. That may be his success but I know that I play a part in that and seeing him learn, grow and love life is success to me. Personally, it could be hitting a personal record when lifting weights, making someone’s days, completing a big project at work, etc. I think someone could go on and on. At the end of the day if my family is healthy, happy and grateful I feel successful.

My success is what I do from my heart. Not the materialistic things I do of the world. It is through the righteousness of my spirit.

Great post Jay! I’ve always used Earl Nightingale’s definition: “Success is the progressive realization of a worth goal.” Which means if you are in pursuit of something that means something, you are successful.

The line that stands out to me and I love “..instead should be measured with the amount of happiness and joy one has in life and the impact you have on people…”
-being an all rounder in terms of your ability at home ,with friends and family
-Independent, but interdependent
-Reliable to yourself and others
–Able to make stuff happen with-nos- support
-Being able to make yourself laugh at your own stupidity
-Making others laugh at your stupidness -deliberately so that they get to laugh a little in a day – meaning your ego and self esteem is so high that it don’t matter if people think your stupid – cause you know your not and you know you are giving them a free laugh – and we all need to a laugh
but you need money – so sorry but you do need money to buy stuff, food, electricity , laptop and internet to blog on.. so has disgusting as money is you kinda need it..
great post, on point and great read.

Great! Success is enjoying the beauty of “day to day”, taking steps to get where you want to go and feeling content along that journey!

Great post! You are spot on about defining success. What I would consider success you may disagree with. For me, success is helping my clients achieve their goals.

My definition of success is something you’ve wanted to achieve and you achieved it is success. For example, I want to work on growing my blog into a career. After I archive that dream I would succeed. Right now, it’s successful. Great post! 🙂

Great thought provoking article. Success for me is about legacy. What have I poured into people that leaves an impact far beyond my earthly existence. So for me success is define in one word transcendence.

Great post Jay!
I think you and I have similar defintions of success.
I would define success as “doing what you enjoy while simetaneoulsy being able to provide for yourself (and your family).”

Love it. I also tell my kids that their success is being happy in what ever they do. If you enjoy it, then you’re successful.

Great post. Your questions are so valid and make you examine your life. Reminder to stop comparing ourselves to other people and to validate our lives based on what we have and feel. Those people behind the gilded gates aren’t necessarily happier than others just because they have money. Follow your own personal path. Thanks for the reminder, as I can get caught up in comparing to others lives.

Truth be told my definition of success has continued to grow and change in the past few years. Even now I can’t just write it out for you. It depends on what we are talking about.. professionally, personally, romantically…etc.
If I had to sum it up into one generic line I’d say I define it as doing things I enjoy with people I enjoy without having to worry about the basics of life.

This is great. I think some times we focus more on what we think success means to other people than what it means to ourselves. Everyone has their own version of success and I think it is so important to remember that.

For me, starting to define success is starting with am I happy? Will I look back on *whatever* and have positive feelings about it? For me, being happy, living a life I WANT to live equals success. Just my opinion though.

Success is to learn from failure, it’s to face your fear and to stand up, it’s be happy and to appreciate what you have got in life.

Not having to wake up everyday to report to a nine to five job is success to me. I got rid of all my debt and was living on a monthly fixed income. However, in the last two years I loaned money to a few friend which was never repaid. I have since incurred a few debts which I’m currently paying off. I hope to be debt free again in the next two years.
