Ask Jay #10 – Dreams but NO MONEY

Question:

I’m aspiring to turn my blog into a business among other business ventures, and I find my lack of resources to be an issue in my process. Unfortunately, my job only covers my expenses to survive (rent, utilities, food, etc.), but I don’t have any money to invest in the businesses that I hope to delve in to and I don’t have a support system outside of my husband, who is a stay at home dad and works online (doing little gigs to help out). How do I turn the little into something big? Is there really a way to make your goals happen with barely anything at all?

Answer:

I often get asked this question on a frequent basics. Not just relating to blogging, but for any goal/dream that someone may have. Many times we have obstacles that we have to overcome i.e. lack of knowledge, time and insufficient amount of money to support our dreams. Regardless, of how bad we want something  life will always throw stumbling blocks in our way. The key is to never focus on what we don’t have, but what we do have. For example, you explained how you want to turn your blog into a business venture, but don’t have the adequate amount of funds to support this endeavor. However what you do have is passion and a mindset focused on making this happened. Just think you even sought out advice on how to achieve your goal, because you’re passionate about making it come to fruition. So the best advice I can tell you is utilize what you do have, you may not have money, but you may have time to invest in your blog. You can spend time reading articles, books or researching how to turn a blog into a business. Also you can just simply work on your craft, take free e-courses about blogging and spend time learning the necessary steps needed to make this jump. Also before anyone should turn a blog into a business be aware you should be receiving at least one hundred views a day and about five to six hundred views a week. This is just to ensure if you do invest money into your blog you will be able to see a return on your investment. In the end always believe in yourself anything is possible if you work hard, never give up and don’t let naysayers stop you from achieving your goal.

Are their friends and family who might be willing to make an investment in you? Prepare a plan you can share with them. Be sure to explain the cost/benefits of investing and time frame for when they can expect to have their money back. Also, how is your credit? If it’s good, consider using it to invest in your business. If it isn’t, be sure to use your current resources to fix it. Do you have an economic development corporation in your county? If so, schedule a meeting with them, to see how they can help. Can stay at home dad work a night job to help with expenses?

  5. I like your wisdom Jay “never focus on what we don’t have, but what we do have”. Important to pay heed too. Success is a slow process and for good reason. Otherwise we wouldn’t have the character to manage the success when it finally comes.

Great advice! What you say is true, we have to focus more on what we do have than what we don’t have.
