What’s Holding You Back?

“Don’t let anything hold you back from your dreams”

Many times when we’re going after our dreams and aspirations it always seems like there’s something holding us back. Rather its monetary issues, family, naysayers etc. When we are on the road to greatness usually we run across some type of setback. That can sometimes derail us from continuing the journey to our predestined success.  In many cases there are various number of obstacles that can discourage us from achieving our goals.  Today I will share five things that hold us back.

  1. Waiting For The Right Time:

Often times we are waiting for ever elusive “right time”. There IS never really is a right moment the best time may seem cliché but it really is RIGHT NOW. Waiting for the right moment can be disguised as procrastination.

  1. Never Take Action:

Many of us make awesome list and lovely plans and re-write these same plans every year. Without taking any action towards your these plans. If we only visualize our plans and don’t put any action we can become stagnate. Our first step to correct this is to simply put our plans it to action. This may seem simple but it truly a simple concept just starting is the key.

  1. Let ‘Negative People’ Take Your Energy:

Some people our naturally negative, mean and just downright miserable and many times they try to put this energy off on us. Which can a determent to our success. In the end we have to watch who we surround ourselves with.

  1. Looking For Others for Approval:

Once we recognize that we are responsible for our lives and no matter what some else thinks it’s still our life. Taking action and having faith in your own decisions will help us when naysayers come.

  1. Comparing Ourselves to Others:

Comparing our success to others is never a good idea, because each us have our own path to what each individual defines as success. Once we find what’s essential to us and what success looks and feels like.

Final Thoughts

In the end we have a habit of focusing more on what is going wrong, rather than what is going right and sometimes we forget our small successes. I want to encourage everyone to remember that success is a journey, not a destination! What was some of things in your life that used to hold you back? 2. I still have trouble with numbers 4 and 5 (though I’m still young I probably shouldn’t be the one to talk, most kids my age have problems with all that you have listed). I have to stop looking for approval, that is my biggest problem.
Thank you for pointing out clearly what you should avoid while chasing your dreams. 😀

    Hi Jay.
Most of us that tend to hold back are normally bad at making decisions.
These bad decisions are made because of lack of thought.
Spur of the moment, knee jerk reactions.

Take all things into consideration first and then make a decision.
This should move you forward not back.
    Max.
    I say “Make a decision”

Amazingly sufficed all the major bullets.
In my case, it was my procrastination and diversion of focus which held me back.
But otherwise the points you mentioned are the major rulers.

  12. Great read! I think it’s highly overused, but still true that the best time to start something is usually right now! I’ve loved starting to take more action on my writing lately and the ability to get the word out. Although it is growing slowly, I’m starting to make some great connections with some great people that I would have never connected with. I’m so happy that I did take action and the results have been a lot of fun!

Thanks for the encouragement and I would definitely second people chasing their dreams in a safe but meaningful way!

  14. I think my main issue is just that I STILL don’t know what exactly I want to do! I’m still trying to figure out my dream…well I know what it is, but I have a few different routes to getting there and I can’t seem to choose one. I think often we get overwhelmed by our options and having too many choices, that we just don’t do anything.

  22. Hi,Jay! You have an excellent blog–I love your insight. As for number 3, “Let ‘Negative People’ Take Your Energy” this is so true. I like to say be an encourager to the negative people, but if you’re trying to focus on personal goals, the naysayer could have you accepting defeat in no time. So I encourage others to, also, surround themselves with positive people, those who may have like minded goals (Because let’s be real, some of the naysayers might be family members!). Sometimes finding positive people who have like-minded paths is hard, but it is not impossible. Honestly using the internet as a search engine to locate groups is one idea, not to mention reading books, and finding online reading materials is a great way to connect with others. Just as you convey, taking action is important!

Again, great insight and it looks like you’re on that road to being a great encourager in many people’s lives!

This might sound cheesy but I had this little moment 6 years ago when I was waiting in line at a street food cart. There was this graffiti on the wall that said: “Do what you can use what you have.” Quite a lifechanging moment.

  29. What a great post Jay, this was such a good read. I always say that there is no way to be able to fail without starting and there is no way to succeed without trying. This post is a little reminder that I have to take my own advice sometimes lol

Honestly, I am holding me back. I am super introverted and super lacking self-confidence. I know that there is no reason that I should act like this, but it hurts me in every way. I want to do so much and can’t bring myself to do anything.

  34. A lot of these are so true! We are always waiting for the right time to do things, but is there ever really a right time? Sometimes you just have to go out there and do it! Thanks for the encouragement and great tips!

  36. Very good reminder that we should focus more on ourselves and how we’re going to achieve out goals instead of letting others get in the way. I love that last bit about looking at what keeps going wrong instead of what we’re doing right. It will always take time.

  37. For me, I struggled a long time with “impostor syndrome”. But after accomplishing some major life goals, I know how capable I am. No one can take those achievements from me, and in turn, they’ve provided me with a lasting self esteem which assures me I’m an equal at the table. This is a very insightful post. Thanks for sharing.

So many people are always waiting “for the right time.” Sometimes there is no right time. There is only do or do not. So you have to take a leap of faith.

  39. There have been times that I’ve let negative people influence the things I wanted to do. These days I’ve taken that power away from them so I only have myself to blame if I don’t do the things I want to. I’m enjoying my new empowerment.
