The concept “more money more problems” has been publicized in the media for years. Many people believe money can solve all their problems. In today’s money hungry materialistic society money has become looked at in such high regard, because you need it for pretty much everything. So this brings up the question does having more money equivalent more or less problems?
More Money Less Problems
If you’re like me and do not have tons of money and sometimes struggle to pay your bills each month. It may be unreasonable for us to have any compassion for the problems that some wealthier people face. In most of our eyes having large sums of income coming in every week be life changing. In generally most people would assume that having money would solve majority of their problems. How many people would love to have the money to pay their mortgage payment, car payment or credit card statements? The idea that having money would somehow cause us more problems may seem far-fetched.
The Reality of Money
We all know that in order to live a healthy and prosperous life that you need some type of constant income. The question is how much do you really need or want to live the lifestyle you want. This can become problematic because having money is great until we realize that having “more money” can bring up issues that we may not have preconceived we would have to face. Such as envy, hate, jealousy, more expenses i.e. bills and the responsibility that having a lot of money comes with. These problems might seem small and insufficient to someone who doesn’t have very much money. The rich have problems just different kind that might not be upon the minds of people with a couple less zeros behind their paycheck.
Final Thoughts
Money cannot solve all our problems or remove every worry, but it does have the power to reduce stress in tough times while providing opportunity in good times. In the end money is necessary and with more of it we can have some of our stress alleviated. What do you think if you have more money would you have less problems? I was fortunate enough to raise a significant raise at my job a few months ago. I was thrilled, grateful, and humbled. The raise occurred right before my husband and I closed on our first house together, which was a big boost to both of us. That extra money has helped me contribute more to my savings, retirement, and help map out a plan to help contribute to the household bills on a monthly basis. It feels wonderful to have this cushion. I’m not sure if having more money equals less problems, but it certainly takes off stress!

I can definitely see how having more money in some settings can cause more problems. I know some people who overly stress due to worrying about all the things they have to do to get and maintain that money.

Money can solve some problems, but if a person doesn’t have a good head for finances and self control then more money just means more expenditures and not less stress at all. I used to do collections and I spoke to all kinds of people, some well off and some not so well off. One in particular was brought to mind when I read this…I spoke to someone who had won a state lottery and it was millions….the person still could not pay their bills even with that annual income because they got one big check each year, and blew it all immediately and had nothing to live on the rest of the year. Another interesting thing that I have witnessed is that people sometimes think if you are spending less that you have more, but if you are over spending what is coming in each month, then when you quit doing that you don’t have more….To put it more simply if you spend $100 more than you make each month and you suddenly quit spending that $100 then you don’t suddenly have $100 more in the bank each month you just have $100 less debt each month. Now, over time as your debts go down, then you can have more with the same income. That is if no other expenses increase and take up the slack. For some reason this is not an easy concept for some. I did find your post to be very interesting and thought provoking.

In my case more money has caused more problems and more stress. It has caused feelings of resentment and jealousy towards me from my family members. It has funded my husbands sexual addiction and affairs. It puts us in a tax bracket that disqualifies us from any type of government service or financial aid to help fund our children’s education…we have 6 children. It has created a level of discontent and entitlement in our children to a certain extent. I am working on this with them though with success. I am thankful for the opportunities it has provided us and the things we have been able to accomplish because of it but there are days where I wish we didn’t even have those options for simplicity’s sake. It can have the ability to relieve stress but in my experience it created too much.

I believe “more money, more problems” is in regards to people who have no idea what to do with money: someone who is irresponsible or someone who does not have a good head on their shoulders. While I think humble beginnings help (although it’s not guaranteed), as long as you’re smart about your decisions (and considerate/compassionate of others) you should be fine.

When the rich people act selfish, they are the ones who lost, if you are full of heart, you win. The prize is feeling good inside, you can change the way you are too, try doing nice, good deeds, help an old lady cross the street, end fights with feelings, and Stand up to bad choices. Always choose the right choice, even if it means to sacrifice, because in heaven, there is law, law of trust, sacrifice, and good people.

Jay you are spot on. If there are problems to begin with then more money can create more problems. Look at how many lottery winners who file bankruptcy within 5 years of their winning. Be smart and stay in control.

Just give me more money. Trying to cushion yourself when you don’t have money in the first place is extremely stressful. Of course more money means nothing if you can’t be responsible with it, but dammit I’d love to see what it’s like lol. For me, it’d be a stress reliever and a cushion if I had the guarantee of more money.

Very interesting piece (as always!) Jay. Let’s keep it real -money can solve a lot of problems, but certainly not all of them – especially serious problems like health issues. I have been in situations of having zero money and having access to money. The sad reality is when you have it, you tend to spend it so you’re back where you started just with higher expenses. 🙂

A child in Africa who has no money, and walks miles a day to get his village water… can be much happier than a multi-millionanaire living a lonely purposeless life. Purpose brings happiness I think, natural happiness. Money brings short-term happiness.

Definitely more money would help my life. I’m on permanent disability and can’t work and it’s hard to make ends meet. I’d love to travel like I used to…I have the time now, but—you got it!—no money! Also with more money I’d have more access to some of the treatments and medications I need. But I am thankful daily for all the very many blessings that I DO have! And remembering them—including the fact that I have enough money to live on, I’m not starving or homeless—makes life better in and of itself and comes with no price-tag attached….

Insightful post! Aside from religion, money is probably the most controversial topic in the world. Everyone wants it but nobody tries to understand it. Money is just scarce valuable resources. Anything that’s scarce and valuable translate into more money. There are more teachers in the world than professional basketball players. However, being extremely skillful at shooting a ball into a hoop is more scarce than teaching. Are teachers more valued in this world? Absolutely. However they are not scarce.

This post nailed everything I have said numerous times through out my mid teens until now and until I die. It is sad but very true. I am sure that there are many others in this community who share the same views on this topic.
I for one could use a few more dollars in my pocket a month. My views for becoming wealthy are, sure a large some of riches would be nice because there are a few people I would love to grace with some help out of generosity, but there are some of them who wouldn’t stop at that gift, They would be back for more. Then you have those they completely return the favor by kicking you in the teeth because you say NO.
There is always so many people who strike it rich and to some it is a rush to the stores, Auto, Buying homes ect. However that being said somethings a must but some don’t realize binge spending running out of money happens fast.
Their world crashes, debts pile doctor bills, ect. Not that I have experienced the problems of the wealthy, but I have seen a couple stories and aftermath firsthand.
Final thoughts
1. Be satisfied with what you have in life. You cant take your riches when you die. Help others when you can. It will come back to you, just when you need it.
2. Greed and Jealousy are among the top motives for murder.
Is your life worth the troubles of wealth. If you can control how and what you do with it, Yes

Well, money buys good treatments and effective medications. If I had enough money to afford a normal surgical services I wouldn’t be where I am now. It’s no pleasure to work for 16 hours a day like I used to do and receive something that hardly covers expenses. Every situation is totally different, therefore, generalizing what money does and what money doesn’t is sort of silly. For people with health problems and serious health issues having enough money for their treatments is a life saver, that would them also to have a normal quality of life. I just looked at prices of dressings I was advised to get and a pack of 10 is almost 1000 bucks. How long will they last? 20 days. All people need shelter and food. Look at Canadian home prices where barns are sold now at a few millions. Where do the people live without money? There is quite a lot of social housing already. Is that somebody’s dream: to spend their only life in some basement or even in a trailer? That’s already happening because what can you do if you cannot afford even a rented apartment. Health directly depends on food we consume. Good food is very expensive. The only cheaper way is to grow it. But without soil that won’t work, will it?
Rich people have their problems and poor people have their problems. I would say in many situations our life would be much better and way more enjoyable if we didn’t have to slave for peanuts. And somebody grabs it all … by selling these poor guys poisonous chemically processed food, bad quality clothes and 500 hundred times higher priced medications. Money solves a lot of problems for a lot people who have common sense and who have some kind of idea of what the real values in life are.
In my case, money would solve at least 10 abnormally bad issues within the 2 upcoming months. So, I disagree, that in hands of reasonable people money causes more problems. Sure, give 10 mills to an idiot and they’ll waste it in no time.

I think you said it well – money has the potential to reduce stress to a point which can increase happiness. But after that ambiguous ‘point,’ it can’t make you happy any more. It can get you fun stuff but most people know (even if they forget for a bit) that that doesn’t actually make a human ‘happy.’ I’m sure there’s a graph somewhere 🙂

Like the first comment on this thread, I to have recently come upon the fortune of a quite significant raise. In my opinion this is a matter of how you approach life. There are certainly inevitable “cons” that I am sure one with a large amount of money will run into. Such as your above mentioned situation of jealous family members and what have you. But in reality, the human condition seems to show us that we are hard wired to strive for more. Once we achieve our goals, it’s time to set new ones. One’s life will always produce obstacles that are befitting of what we are trying to achieve. I always say that my problems, no matter what they may be, are no more significant than anyone else’s. That being said, that raise is something that took an immense amount of stress from my shoulders, and gave me a chance to cut down on overtime and focus on personal growth and development that will benefit myself and my family!

I do think that with more money, you are faced with a different set of problems. However, from a happiness standpoint, I don’t think it is essential to have a lot of money to be happy but I think it sure helps! Great post!

I think once people get to a certain uber rich status there must be a lot of complications.
But anyone who believes the saying, in terms of being happier, is an idiot. If someone is unhappy poor they will be unhappy rich.
But money can buy securities, and relieve stress in terms of bills and the basics of life.

It seems as if this article was written for me and I had missed it until now. I can relate and experienced quiet a few of the things you are talking about.
My excellent work ethic landed me a promotion to run my own store. While the money was great of not having to turn every penny, it was also the price of having less and less free time. The work life balance was almost none existent as I had to be reachable even on my days off. After all I was always the one in charge, on the clock or not, well or which you are technically always on even when you are salaried and don’t punch.
The biggest struggle was the undermining of my coworkers which I now had past in the process of this promotion. There was no happiness for me and my accomplishment but rather I was introduced to jealousy and envy. It never went away even though I helped promote some of those people and I had no team to depend on. It was one of the hardest times in my career which placed a lot of skeletons into my closet.
I am dealing with similar problems now since I have a new job but came in at a higher pay as people that have been there longer then me. Unfortunately the HR supervisor could not keep this confidential and had the spread the news only to cause animosity and envy once again. Very sad and very hurtful at times. I plan to write a post in addition to my “the detail of retail” posts to share my experiences when the time is right. (No advertising for my blog) intended.

Unfortunately more of the old with the new job except I’m not the store manager this time. My work ethic is too good and I have too much experience which makes me sad to say a thread to others who are not performing at that level.
I remember a time where the experience on your resume was an asset, I’m not sure if this still exists, but I have faith that there is a place it could be appreciated.

I think money just gives you more options. There are a ton of statistics about the size of your income vs. your happiness but I think what it comes down to is really just choice. Money is great but the secret to having more is to not worry about it. Worry about living your life, the money will come.

Having no money is a problem, having money is itself a problem.. Money can’t make us happy all the time but yes it can solve our problems, make us a new person, reduce our tensions. So, who’s gonna hate money.. But the feeling of not having it and still being happy is outstanding.

I really agreed with you on all levels.
Having more money 💰 can certainly alleviate some problems..
But having too much.. will create more problems not expected or anticipated.. and Too much makes one lose motivation..
I just want to make enough money to live comfortably

I believe that it is not how much money one has, but rather living with the money we have and making it work. If you can’t pay it back in thirty days, credit will make you a slave!
Living within one’s means is the true source of peace!

Money only amplifies what the spirit already has. The more money you make the more responsibilities you have to uphold, which results in finding more solutions to fix problems. Wealth management is all about creating steady cash flow and having more options and freedom to live your life as you’ve imagined. I’m going to die a billionaire–believe that!

Having more money just means you have to watch people who will try to steal it from you !! The government being the #1 thief, then the people who can sue you and win even if their wrong. Sometimes I think the laws are there to protect the poor. They think the rich or even people who are just self sufficient, it’s okay if they get dinged. Well I’m here to say it’s not okay to ding anyone unjustly. This legal system can go to hell and I really hate the law professions. That’s all for now. My husband and me are hard working, definitely not rich and have been dinged so many times I just am ready to give up. I’ll stop for now and go sit down so all of you can give me the what for’s. ❤ Blessings, I think…

having the ability to say yes is a great feeling but without the balance of no’s it’s a ruinous feeling. having no fear of the bossman or woman because i don’t survive on this “hob” or because they own me- sure is a beautiful feeling but it’s unhelpful as most do not know how to cope with such lippiness. one could have a checkbook of awesome power but little respect and find themselves buying after respect and losing as most only want the money and giving them any is not proof to them you warrant respect. money isn’t the heart of evil- the love of money is and while that’s biblical sounding as it is a concept in the book, it’s worth splitting that hair. just because someone has a midas touch isn’t a sin but a joy to be around them some – but if one only chases money such is subtle but a soul who is less concerned with you but rather what situations are worth.

I suppose it really depends on how much “stuff”(material possessions) you buy with your money, the more some people earn, the more expensive stuff they buy. This does not apply to all people with a lot of money however, whether we have more money or less we still accumulate “stuff”. I am packing up and moving over two thousand kilometers to another state and selling everything except clothing, office materials, and personal items such as activations.
It is most interesting when we learn to let go of what we thought was at one time significant stuff, how little it really means to us. If it sits in a cupboard or shed for more than a year unused un-looked at, it is meaningless stuff with no purpose except to clutter the mind, time to get rid of it.

While I don’t care to be rich, a chunk of money would solve a LOT of my problems, to be honest. It would allow me to pay for medical procedures that insurance companies deem as “cosmetic”, even though such things are ruining my life.

There is a little joke about this that goes “Money might not solve all my problems, but I sure as hell would prefer crying in a Mercedes than on the bus.”
And money opens up a lot of opportunities – travel, pastime activities, access to better healthcare, better education etc.
So, yea, even if it is not the end goal (as what we really want is the experiences of having/doing/being something), it sure helps to have more of it!

Everyone has their problems. The rich also cry. Money cannot solve all problems. A wise man said to me, “eventually, money will be useless”. You know what makes the rich with problems cry? It is because with all the money they have, their problems could not be solved.
Let’s digress a little. What should we say about the nine wealthy men who back then in 1923, in Illinois were the who and who when it comes to money? Some died in prison, some committed suicide and so on. Did money made them so? Only God knows.
The love of money is the root of all evil. The lack of money, too, is the root of all evil.
No one is ever contented with the amount he has. “A little bit more” when Rockefeller was asked the amount of money it would take to be OK for him.

I think the presense or absense of money effects people differently dependant apon where in the world they live. I think in the west our self worth can be tied to how much we have. I’ve be fortunate to travel to many places where some of the poorest people are the happiest. Im also around wealthy people & have seen how in some, the stresses they encounter are reduced by their financial postition.
Everything begins & ends with you first. If you can find meaning in the immaterial then you will always be able to access peace within yourself.

This was true for me when I first got a raise, the increase in money increased my expenses because in my mind I could afford. Now I’m just waiting for my next raise so I can calm things down a bit and have a bigger expense-to-income ratio! Great post.
