Realistic Thinking: Change Your Mindset

We’ve all have had conversations with ourselves about if our dreams are realistic or are we somewhere in the clouds thinking we can ever achieve them. This is usually when what I like to call the “maybe thoughts” creep into our mind. Then we start thinking things like “maybe I should have a backup plan because you never know what could happen”. This mindset and thought process has plagued many of us on our road to success. Many times we hinder our own success by simply thinking “realistic”. In many cases our family, friends or significant others reinforce this outlook that we need to be realistic about our goals and dreams. Most of the time their intention is not to discourage us from going after are goals but that they want you to have a concrete or safe plan. This advice can cause self-doubt and be very detrimental to our already predestined success.

Importance of Changing Our Thought Process

Changing our mindset is one first steps to accomplish whatever we set out to do. Majority of people know that going after your dreams can be overwhelming. Many of us know or have heard of someone who went after their dreams and it didn’t come true. The blatant truth is most people who have a goal that they set for themselves never achieve it. I have read many different articles, books and blog post that have stated 92% to 95% of our goals and dreams don’t come true. With so high stats it must be some missing ingredient that a lot of us don’t have. After some research I found an overwhelming majority of people who have reach their goals all agree on one thing “when my mindset changed everything changed”. Simply meaning that once they changed their thought process it made it easier to take the other necessary steps to achieve their dreams. A very successful entrepreneur once told “Before I accomplished anything I told myself I want this so bad that I’m willing to sleep in my car and get a gym membership and take my showers there until I’m successful”. His mindset was by any means necessary he was going to accomplish his goals. Now many of us don’t have to take our mindset to that extreme level unless we have extreme dreams.

No Limit to Success

Many people limit their own success by thinking what they can’t do and not what they can do. The power in our thoughts is more powerful than some of us believe. Thinking positive thoughts can change your whole outlook on life. Being realistic usually holds us back from our true potential and leads us to mediocrity. Making a practical choice is sometimes the better option for a lot of us, because we don’t truly believe in ourselves. Once we start to trust and believe in ourselves anything is achievable no matter what thinking realistic or in similar terms doubting ourselves really has no use in our lives if we want success.  Defining success is an important step towards this mindset shift many of us have different views on what that truly is as we found out on “How Do You Define Success”. After I wrote that article I started to ponder my true definition of success and I came up with “once you figure out your purpose in life is when you can truly find success”. Also I found that no matter your definition of success or the goal you want to achieve the underlying factor is your mindset. Once we change it for the better everything else will fall into place with unwavering hard work and dedication.

This is a great post – thanks for inspiring! I’ve found with age that one of the best things to ask myself when I’m feeling I can’t do something because…. is “How Can I Do That?” – it’s amazing what plans and opportunities seem to come my way when I ask this question just before falling asleep.. xx

There have been times where I’ve had to reevaluate what I’m hoping to accomplish. Where the terms of success have needed to change based on the changing circumstances. It’s important to realize that even small success is still success. Allow yourself to be happy with the progress. Make smaller goals so you can track your progress better.

Thank you for sharing. A well written article.

In the movie “A Wonderful Life”, the angel Clarence leaves a note for the leading character, George.
The movie takes us from George’s childhood to his wordly “success”, to crisis and the verge of suicide. Considering himself a failure, George contends he is worth more dead than alive. At the end of the story, dozens of people rally to help and support George and his family, and he is enlightened to the truth about what is important in this Wonderful Life. After our emotional journey, Clarence’s note does not define success, or what George is, or what he may become. It clearly defines what he is not. As Clarence wrote:
“No man is a failure who has friends.”

Actor Sidney Poitier shared his philosophy, to which I subscribe.
“I try to be a little better every day.”

    Seek peace,

    Paz

  9. I love this and for that same reason truly dislike the world ‘realistic’. As an athlete we have to believe ‘impossible is nothing’ and the correct mind-set is fundamental to success. I’ve also written about how people define success as individuals in my motivational stories section. I really love this post. Thanks for sharing.

  11. Interesting post. I tend not to put much energy into goals as they prevent me from living in the moment. I’ll put a goal out there into the ether, trusting that if I just keep plugging along in the right direction, it will happen. Then again, perhaps my goal is happiness in the moment, so I’m in constant goal-mode! 😀 😀 I find that if I’m a positive person then positive things happen, so the active pursuit of goals in almost unnecessary. Of course, it’s all situational too. Hmm. Clearly need to ponder this one. Ha ha.

Yes!!!!! I had to change my mindset, especially before this last project of blogging! I am in the start up phase of my business and if my mindset was one of defeat, I would be no where close to where I am now. So when your mindset shifts your business shifts

  13. Wow, changing how the way we think is so much to learn. Mind setting is such a big word, and I always love talking about mindset. I actually have formula on this, right mindset + right action = right result. Whatever we feed our mind, it is something that comes out in the end.

In response to your request for thoughts, I have changed my mind set by finding reasons to choose to be happy. My ex-wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2008 and I was at every appointment. In 2010 and 2012 I endured surgery to my spine and the long recovery that followed. Just before Christmas in 2013 my wife filed for a divorce after 28 years of marriage (everything finalized in April 2016). My choice to look for happiness during these difficult times kept my focus on the positive instead of being dragged into the cesspool of bitterness. Not easy to accomplish but a far better mindset. Your thoughts are spot on and hopefully they help other people with their struggles. Well done post.

    Lovely!
Got this from the book GOD’S LOVE.
“A soldier in Bible times knew that he would not last long in battle without his helmet. Often made of metal and fitted over a cap of felt or leather, the helmet ensured that most blows directed at the head would glance off with little harm done. As a helmet protects the head, hope can protect your mind, your thinking.”
Thus, the power of mindset abound!

I miss the writing structure though – “The Final Thoughts” thingy… 🙂

  17. Very well said throughout! The only limitation ever there is in the mindset …in what you believe of yourself and what you want. I love Wayne Dyer’s quote ‘I am realistic. I expect miracles’. I find the quote very powerful to live by.

  18. One of my favorite quotes of all time is from the author Anais Nin (1903-1977). She said “Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.” When you realize that you are in the driver’s seat of your own life, you can make profound changes and improvements in the quality of your existence. Like Jay said, it just takes a shift in your thinking.

I discovered how powerful my thoughts really are. Everything I write comes from a place of happiness. Remaining positive through turmoil is true strength. Dreamers envision the invisible so they’re capable of achieving the impossible.
